The open-plan living-dining-kitchen layout hasn't gone away, but the way it's handled has matured. Instead of one undivided box, we're zoning within the open plan — a partition, a change in flooring, a drop in ceiling height — so the space still flows but each zone reads as its own room. A slatted wood partition or a half-height display unit does this without closing the space off.
